LibriVox recording of The Curious Quest by E. Phillips Oppenheim.
Read in English by Adrian Praetzellis
A sweet, simple tale of how friendship and honesty triumph over money. The protagonist’s pun of a name—Ernest Bliss—foreshadows the plot in which this bored young millionaire transforms his indolent self and finds love. Typical of its era (1919), this book contains a few antisemitic stereotypes. The story was made famous by the 1936 film The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss with Cary Grant and Mary Brian.
E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946), was born in London and wrote more than one hundred novels as well as many short stories and film adaptations, some under the name of Anthony Partridge. His 1941 autobiography, The Pool of Memory, is well worth reading. (Summary by Adrian Praetzellis)

Just to let you know, I’ve been waiting for THIS book! I found the film with Cary Grant many years ago and had to find the book it was based
...
on. Adrian Praetzellis is also the perfect fellow for this performance. (His “Wind In The Willows” audiobook is already awesome as all-get-out.) He has the voice for this *and* he knows the context of it. (Context as mentioned in his 1919 reference, ahem.) I am so grateful! (If I could drive up to your house, Adrian, and give you a hug, with permission? I WOULD!)
Now to the story: Kickin’! Ernest Bliss is spoiled and a jerk and he knows it and he wants to change it. Bliss is the hero we all wish for! But his doctor has to get his goat to make him go. For a millionaire? A wager very often works! And the lovely thing about the wager is its stipulations leaves Ernest open to helping other people, which I’m sure the Doctor might not have anticipated.
So we see Ernest coming across harsh difficulties for the first time in his life, but what he cares more about is seeing other people far worse off than he ever was going through it too. That is the key gem of his experience and this book expresses how to combat so much evil in the (almost) modern world. If anyone believes this reader sounds “tired” sometimes? He should be! Because Bliss is working his bum off to make a point.
Okay, yes, I am a majorly fan-girl-ing this, but I’ve been so excited. (And drooling is a prerequisite with me because, as some of you know, my saliva content is already too high by inheritance. – Thanks, Mum!)
So much applause, and thank you again! We cannot download this enough! ^_^

When listening to a book, I often wish I had more time to just read it myself instead of being "spoon fed" so that I can stop and chew while comprehending

the words. This is one of those Librivox books that I don't think I could have enjoyed more if I had read it myself.
Adrian Praetzellis' presentation of this book was a wonderful feast!
